Harm Reduction

Harm reduction is meeting people where they are without judgment, recognizing that behavior is complex and change is gradual, prioritizing immediate safety and health, and respecting individual choice and dignity. It focuses on combating stigma, and providing access to information and supplies. It is inherently a more compassionate approach to health care and social issues in our communities.

Bloom is pleased to have the presence of the psyLush Sanctuary Risk Reduction Team, a grassroots Toronto based initiative which aims to mitigate any potential harms that may arise. Look out for their vibe patrol’s LED arm bands while on the dance floor if you need any assistance. Visit the Sanctuary if you are feeling overwhelmed, need a friend, a small respite from the dance floor, risk reduction supplies, have any questions about consent, harm reduction or are just curious about what they do! They are here to ensure you have a safer Bloom experience!

Tips to supporting harm reduction at Bloom and in the world beyond

  • We recommend buddying up with a friend. Take care and check in on one another. Haven’t seen a friend in a while? Take a moment to check your camp. Are they resting safely? Do they need water?

  • Gentle reminders to eat, drink water and find rest are great risk reduction tools!

  • If you see someone who may need assistance, notify someone with a radio or an LED arm band, or head to the Sanctuary or Medic team to get help.

  • Carrying naloxone: Many places now offer free naloxone training and kits. Carrying it means you could save someone's life during an opioid overdose. It's simple to use and causes no harm if given to someone not experiencing an overdose.

  • Reduce stigma through changing our language around substance use
